Katniss Everdeen is a normal 16 year old girl living in district 12 until she is forced to go into an outdoor arena. Here 24 kids between the ages of 12 and 18 must fight to the death, and it’s all televised. After they are chosen, they go to the Capitol where they will train and learn survival tactics. The kids will also be interviewed so the audience can know more about them. If they are likeable enough, they will earn sponsors. If the tributes get sponsors and they survive long enough, they’ll get life saving gifts such as food or water, or maybe even medicine and weapons which are both really rare. Once the games start the kids must stand on their metal plate for at least 60 seconds or else the mines will blow them sky high. Once the minute is up, they are free to run to the giant gold horn called a cornucopia where there is an abundance of weapons and gear like tents, spears, a bow and arrows, and other tools. Once they’ve gotten the gear, they either run away or the stronger tributes will team up and kill off the smaller targets and work from there. In the arena, Katniss will face many challenges like killer wasps, fire, and other tributes.
My favorite part was when Thresh, the male tribute from 11, bashes Clove’s skull, the girl from 2, with a rock to avenge his districts’ partners’ death. I thought, “Wow” he must have really cared and he must be really strong to do that.
My favorite character is Cato, the 18 year old boy from district 2, because he’s strong, smart, and a leader. He kills 7 tributes and places 3rd out of 24 because it’s a book about someone else. If this was real life he would have dominated.
The point of this book is the effect of war. My reaction was I immediately want to read the next book in the series.I loved this book and so will you. I felt kind of sad reading the book because you get attached to the characters and then they go and kill them off. This book has something for everyone like action, adventure, romance, comedy, and suspense.
I recommend this book for ages 10 and up. Younger kids should not read it because they could be afraid and have nightmares. I think boys would like this book more because of the action, even though the main character is a girl.
The movie is a lot like the book, but I recommend reading the book first or you may be confused. If they had put every little detail from the book into the movie, it would have been at least four to five hours long. Reading the book gives you more details.
