Number the Stars is a book of danger, adventure, and friendship. You’ll never know what’s going to be around the corner, and neither did Annemarie and Ellen. It all started out in Copenhagen, Denmark, when the Nazis had taken over. Two young girls who very best friends have a scary encounter with two tall and mean German soldiers carrying their rifles. Why was this encounter so scary? One of the girls was Jewish, and she could easily be killed by the soldiers. The story is about how these girls and their families face obstacles. Will the war with the Nazis ever end? Will Ellen and her Jewish family escape the torture of the Nazis? Worse yet, will anyone be killed?
This book reminds me of Letters from Rifka which deals with the same war. It is also a book about a young girl trying to escape Russia and get to America to be free. What I liked a lot in this book is that Annemarie and Ellen were such good friends, even though they were complete opposites. One lesson learned is that you should always help your friends and family through thick and thin.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, danger and reading about friendships. The book is a good read for students in grades 4-6. Read this book to find out what happens to Annemarie, Ellen and their families.
