Number the Stars

Does World War II interest you? Well here is a historical fiction book about a girl named Annemarie that lived during the time of World War II. One day, Annemarie and Ellen were racing on the sidewalk when they were stopped by Nazi soldiers. When the list of all the Jewish people in Copenhagen is stolen, Annemarie risks her life to help her Jewish friend, Ellen. When taking the Jewish people to the boat, Mama gets hurt. Annemarie had to take a package to Uncle Henrik before the boat left or Ellen’s family would be caught.

There are many themes in Number the Stars, but one of them is injustice. This book shows injustice because during World War II many things for the Jewish people during weren’t fair. For example, the Germans closed down Jewish-owned stores. Also the Jewish people did not have equal rights like other people. I enjoyed this book because I enjoy historical fiction books. My favorite character was Kirsti, Annemarie’s little sister, because she was stubborn and funny. She reminds me of my four-year-old sister because she is also stubborn. My favorite part is when Annemarie tried to act like Kirsti with the Nazi soldiers. What makes this book different from other books is that it received a Newbery Award. This book brings up many feelings. At some parts it makes you want to cry and at other parts it makes you want to laugh.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in World War II. I think students in fourth grade and up will enjoy this book. If you like historical fiction, then this is the book for you! I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!
