Edward Tulane is a cold-hearted, proud toy rabbit who loves only himself until he’s separated from his owner, Abilene Tulane. She loves him a lot. While he’s separated, he finds his way through life. He always, somehow, gets separated from his loved ones for many different reasons and finds his feelings.
The lessons to be learned in this book are to be happy, not selfish or mean. I learned that Edward changes because of the love he found. He learns that he has feelings and understands life because of them. The part when Edward falls off a boat after two boys threw him off was devastating and exciting at the same time because that’s when the adventurers start! Edward changes in some ways. He experiences many new emotions like love, depression, fright, hopelessness, and confusion because he had a lot of owners that loved him. I would compare this book to The Tiger Rising (also by Kate DiCamillo) because the main characters in both books have similar feelings.
I recommend this to 3rd through 5th graders and up. You won’t want put this book down. I love this book because the writer touches your heart. Other books by Kate DiCamillo are Because of Winn-Dixie and The Tiger Rising.
